Honed in on A.S.Byatt simply because there was a Radio 4 version of her "Frederica" Quartet. Saw a TV documentary on her, a year or so ago. She writes about some of her books' origins here.
One of the fascinations with Byatt is how much biology goes into the novels, which appeals because of my biology background.
